You know that feeling when you are ready to upgrade your computer? The excitement is real, and it feels like you are about to reach a new level of productivity. That was me, eager to get my hands (or in my case, my eyes) on the Surface Pro 11 after the recommendations from the Geek Squad at my local Best Buy. I was so excited! But of course, in the world of “Megan”, nothing can be that easy.

As I set up my new device, the first thing I tried to install was my eye gaze software, something I use every day. But when I tried to load it, I got the dreaded “not supported” message. Wait, what? How could that be? Then, Google Drive also refused to work. So, I went back to Best Buy, confused and a little frustrated. That is when they explained that the issue was that the Snapdragon processor in the Surface Pro 11 was not compatible with a lot of the software I needed. They suggested I try the Surface Pro 9 instead just like my previous version.

So, I returned the 11 and ordered the Surface Pro 9 from Amazon quickly as they were going out of stock. Before I got too far in downloading everything, I reached out to TobiiDynavox, the company behind my eye gaze software, just to be sure. Their response was “Actually, you need the Surface Pro 10.” Of course I do!!!

At this point, I was tired but still determined. I looked into what made the Surface Pro 10 different, and it turns out it offers up to 64 GB of RAM. As a digital media grad who loves video editing and wants to be a professional Youtuber, I knew this was something I could use. So, I returned the Surface Pro 9 and finally ordered the Surface Pro 10 directly from Microsoft. But it did not end there.

Being responsible, I got a screen protector. I have heard too many horror stories about cracked screens, and I was not about to take that risk. How hard could it be to install? Turns out, harder than expected. My personal care assistant and I tried, but something felt off. The microphone was not working, and the computer seemed sluggish. Back to Best Buy I went, hoping for help.

They took one look and told me we had installed the screen protector upside down! I could not believe it. Now, I am letting the professionals handle the screen protectors. I have had enough tech drama for a while and learned that sometimes, you just need backup.

At the end of the day, it is all part of the process. Life has a way of keeping you on your toes, and sometimes, you just have to laugh. I am so thankful for the Geek Squad at Best Buy. In fact, as soon as I walked into Best Buy, the front retail associate recognized me and greeted me by name, making me feel welcomed. I also am so grateful for my TobiiDynavox rep. She has really been there for me. In the end, never give up on something that is your whole world. In my case, that is my Surface Pro.
