Every year, I eagerly anticipate the arrival of spring break because it’s time for my annual adventure on the slopes with the Keystone Adaptive Center. As someone who uses a sit ski, this experience has become a highlight of my life—one that fills me with joy, determination, and a sense of freedom.
A sit ski, also known as an adaptive bi-ski, is a specialized piece of equipment designed for individuals with mobility impairments. It allows skiers to sit while skiing down the slopes. The sit ski consists of a custom seat attached to two skis, which provides stability and control. To control my directions, I simply lean to the side of the direction I want to go. Strapped securely into the seat, I become one with the mountain.
As I speed down the slopes, the wind in my face and the snow beneath me, I feel a sense of freedom that makes me forget my physical limitations especially when I can communicate via blinking in Morse Code. The mountain doesn’t discriminate—it welcomes everyone. For those precious hours, I’m not defined by my disability; I’m a skier. I “Let It Go”
